listening
I looked straight at it

an atmosphere of troubled freedom
a window into a life different from my own

and the story woke me up

I forgot I was not competent
to open myself to love
to be fully present
to struggle
to take a chance
to pray
to change

I can almost see what is possible

imagine being alive to so many flourishings

we must feel the confusion together
and still do good work

hard-won words matter
art and play and poetry matter

on the evening of victory
and vengeance too hard for us to face
illustrate the generous unknown

honor what is human
within
this moment

It is not too soon to listen
